Theodore Roosevelt National Park and Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park are as different as the men themselves
Fort Lincoln is relatively small and steeped in history. A “private” in Custer’s 7th Cavalry gave us a tour of the ill-fated general’s last home. A nearby barracks, commissary, granary and stable are all rebuilt on their original 1870s sites.A short distance away, part of the infantry fort is also rebuilt, as is a 1700s-era Mandan village of earth lodges.Rugged Roosevelt National Park is 70 times larger and crisscrossed with nature trails. The clay paths get slick after a rain. Extremely slick. Don’t ask how we know this. It’s a haven for wild horses, bison that think nothing of walking through the campground,…and several prairie dog towns (or, in this case, prairie puppy).
